Light Boxes etc [21 Sep 2006|04:32pm]

0nn
I just wanted to share an idea that I really liked for my dorm Apartment.

We placed colored cellophane wrap over the harsh fluorescent light boxes and now we have awesome colored lights in our room. We also put some lamps in to have some real light. We recovered the couches with fabric and safety pins and sectioned off our public space from our private space using a tension right, shower hangers and an old sarong.

Hope you can use some of these ideas for yourseves!

Hey everyone! I'm a new member. My name is Amanda, I'm 19, and I'm just finishing up my freshman year of college. I commuted this year, but I'm moving on campus next year. I'm wondering how much it's going to cost me to furnish/decorate my dorm. A few things to keep in mind:

- It's a suite, which means I will be splitting the cost of any large items (mini-fridge, TV) with 3 other girls instead of 1.
- The room comes with furniture such as bed, dresser, desk, etc. so I won't need to buy any of that.
- I'm planning to shop at fairly low-price stores such as Linens 'n Things, and Target.

Any advice or sharing of personal experiences would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Im moving into a suite in August. I lucked out and basically the setup is there are 5 bedrooms 4 of which are singles and then one is a shared room. we have 2 bathrooms and a kitchen and living room. I have a single room.
We have extra long twin beds and Ive been to all the online places that sell sheets etc but I want something beyond your typical solid colors. and all Ive found are flower prints or something of the like. does anyone know a good site (or store?) that sells cool extra long twin sheets?

Two Beds? [28 Mar 2005|11:45am]

Ok. This is a rather weird question, but I'm not finding anything. *sweatdrop*
I am tranferring to a school in the fall where I will most likely be rooming with my girlfriend. (yay!)
As she is my girlfriend, I would like to sleep in the same bed as her. Two people in one dorm-type bed= DOOM. We've done it. Bleh. So basically, I'm looking for some good hints to make this combined bed as comfortable as possible.

My tentative plan is to push the beds together(duh), tie the actual frames together so they don't slip apart, maybe fill the space between with....something(?) then cover the whole lot with foam cut to fit. If I can find a mattress pad cheapish (a king?) I want to add a panel near the foot to add length. Ditto sheets. (Think me adding a strip of fabic near the bottom to lengthen while not having to lie on it.)
I am fairly crafty, have access to lots of craft type materials and fabic, a sewing machine etc...
Blankets etc, I have under control as we'll both have our own....

Do you think this would work?
Any other suggestions or places to post this?

EDIT:
Apperently the matteress is "standard extra long size" according to the school. Anyone have an idea what the difference is between standard twin and extra long twin?

Hello, I'm a highschool senior soon to be in college. I'm looking for really snazzy bedding (comforters or duvet covers, etc.) and rugs and I've looked allover the place and I can't find anything I'm really in love with. I'm looking for something bright and vibrant and definately no girly, kiddy patterns. I've checked Linens 'N' Things and Bed, Bath and Beyond. I was wondering if someone could recommend any other places (online or whatever) to look. Thanks so much.

Okay, I think this is one of my first posts in this community.

This isn't exactly about decorating dorms... it's more like decorating my dorm sized room. What do I mean by that? Well currently, at my house, I have the bigger room, it has more natural light, 2 windows, and a TINY closet. However, my brother has a smaller room, without much natural light, but a closet that's 4x as big as my current one and only one window. Also, his closet doors slide, they don't open out, and I can, in theory, take the door off leading into his room and put a curtain or beads up instead, since I change in the bathroom and thus don't need the extra privacy a locking door could give me. Since I'm probably not going to a college I could commute to, my mom's decided it'd be best if we switched rooms.

So, my question is... do you have any creative ideas on wall color, lighting, room setup, or anything? I'm not exactly sure how big his room is...

Hi, I'm not sure if this falls into the category of "dorm decor," but it could be related. I don't have a picture of a room to post, but just wondering, in general, what kinds of things you brought that you're glad you brought, didn't bring and wish you did, or purchased when you couldn't live without it. ^_^

Hey guys,

I have a question. I just bought a new house, and I've picked out all my colors for my walls except my bedroom. I already have the comforter i want, which is black and red. What colors can go on the walls with this combination? The house is sort of small, so i have to be careful of what colors i use so it wont look smaller. Any advice? Thanks so much

Well, it's almost that time of year again. I'm moving on Sunday and have most of my stuff already packed up. I'm moving into a triple suite, so I'll post pictures after we're all situated. Anyone else moving this weekend?

I don't normally use one community to promote others but since this is a college community I thought I'd post this in case someone was interested. If this post is a problem go ahead and delete it :) But anyway.... community whoring for a moment....

Some recent discussions in damncollegekids as well as with my housemates have inspired me.

I'm a college kid (well for awhile longer). I'm on a budget. I eat. And school food is lousy. So I cook. And sadly not as well as I'd like. And I want to learn more. And other people do too.

Hence the creation of eat_in_college

Recipes, advice, menus, shopping tips, ideas, etc, all aimed at people who are in college - or just want quick, easy, tasty, healthy food.

We're the guys living on campus. High School/Academy/College/University IT DOESN"T MATTER!! You may love it or hate it. You have an annoying roommate? We've all had one! Financial office being a thorn in your side?! Tell us about it. Cafeteria food keeping you alive... i'm sorry. Up all night studying/partying/chatting/vacuuming/eating ramen... hey ya gotta do it sometime! We've got our own lives to deal with, tests to fail, scholarships to keep, and deans to impress. Keep it down to earth. This is the real deal. No sugar coating going on here. Feel free to bitch about your day, or share the moment you out smarted that one professor. Be proud of your educational career, no matter how dull it may be.

[ mood | Decor Crazy ]

Hi all. I just joined this community. I'm a sophomore at the University of Tennessee..and I'm becoming more and more obsessed with dorm decor. I love the fact that I have something totally new to decorate every fall.

This year is the best, though, because I have a single room. The bed is lofted and everything else in the room is moveable, so I'm able to rearrange it any way I'd like. The room is fairly large (imagine a regular dorm room with only half the furniture)..so as one might expect I am going crazy with decorating. I have a coffee table and dish chair from Target already.

My question to you is.. what else would you suggest? This time, space is nothing to be feared! Just imagine..if you had more space, what would you love to have?

Awaiting your advice,
Stefanie

Well, I was a little bored tonight, so I did a search for dorm stuff (foolishly forgetting that I'm done with school). After realizing it won't do me any good, I figured it might be helpful for you guys!
